Side hustles are the perfect way to start a business when you’re not ready to take the bigger leap and go all in. There are multiple reasons to start a side hustle. Just to name a few…
The possibilities are endless and generally, the risk is much lower than if you were to quit your job to start a business, but it can still be hard to get started.
If you’ve been thinking about starting a side hustle, here are five tips to help you pull the trigger.
The bigger the task you take on at first, the more you’ll overthink it and allow your inner critic to step in. You know your inner critic. He’s that little guy that chimes in right after you’ve had a burst of inspiration and tells you that things must be perfect, that nobody’s going to like what you’re doing, that you need be more practical and realistic.
The next time inspiration hits, take a baby step and don’t give your inner critic the time of day. Starting small is better than never starting at all.
If you're starting a side hustle, you likely have something else going on, whether that means you're a parent, a full-time employee or you have another business that you need to dedicate full-time hours to, so it’s important to manage your time. You'll have to make sure you're getting sh*t done and not only that, but you're getting the right sh*t done.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of being busy for busy sake. Don't do things to feel productive. Be productive. This means working hard but also working smart. Identify the things that will have the most impact on your side hustle and get those done first, even if they’re the most daunting.
It’s important to know WHY you want to start your side hustle and the goal you’re trying to achieve. But when it comes to the HOW, allow yourself some room for trial and error.
It’s difficult to know the exact way to get things done when you first start out. Things will pop up that might require you to change course or do things a little bit differently than you thought you would. If you can't roll with the punches, it's going to take a lot longer for you to get to your end goal.
Obstacles aren’t just there to be a pain in the ass. They’re also there to steer you in the right direction, but you have to be willing to adjust. Being inflexible is like putting on blinders to the things that you need to address to make your side hustle a success.
It’s likely that whatever your side hustle is, you’ll be venturing into new territory. Maybe you need to learn new things about online marketing or you’re jumping into an industry you previously knew nothing about. Give yourself permission to play around with different approaches and to make mistakes along the way. Sometimes the only way to get it right is to get it wrong a few times.
Energy is infectious. Surround yourself with people who are constantly doing, constantly growing and constantly trying to up-level themselves and their businesses. The more that you hang around those people, the less likely you’ll get sucked into going out for drinks, binging Netflix or doing something that's not taking advantage of your precious side hustle time.
If you don’t know anyone like this or if it’s hard to find time to spend with them, listen to podcasts. Every single day, Chris Guillebeau posts a new episode of the Side Hustle School Podcast, which features a successful side hustler. They range from industry to industry and provide valuable tips and ideas. You’ll learn that many of them had other stuff going on, but they were able to prioritize what was important to them. Or that they came up against some challenges and overcame them. That’s the kind of inspiration you need when you’re starting a side hustle.

Jenny also created an online program for new or aspiring entrepreneurs called the 'Six Figure Blueprint'. The focus is on creating a strong business foundation through looking at your Why, the What, and then the How of actually executing. I've been a student of the program since 2019, and highly recommend it to all my fellow girlbosses!
